Profile

Anne Murayama

Founding director of ephemere
Black & white visual storyteller
Based in Tokyo, Japan

Bio

Anne Murayama (村山 杏) completed two pre-medical degrees in Science before following her true love in the Arts. Formerly known as Erin Cross / Erin Nøir of the now-defunct Parallel Planets and Frame Zero, she was also the chief editor of Lomography’s international magazine and the curator-manager of Vetro.

Anne has created a diverse body of work with a diaristic approach — evoking an intimate, mysterious disposition that is distinctly hers. Her works have been exhibited, featured, and published in Cambodia, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, the US, and the UK. She is an alumnus of Invisible Photographer Asia and the Angkor Photo Workshops.

Known for her passion for black and white photography, she continues both personal and collaborative projects as she unceasingly progresses her own style and voice in the said craft. Anne Murayama lives in Tokyo.

Artist Statement

My penchant to explore the fleeting concepts of déjà vu (already seen), presque vu (almost seen), and jamais vu (never seen) through the combined elements of self-portraiture, vernacular street, and experimental studies influence my sensibilities in image-making and storytelling.

While my photographs appear dark and morose, I aim to create visual prose by imbuing the subtlety of both motions and emotions. To me, black and white images illuminate an evocative kind of solitude that I find fascinating — like a phantasm: stripped off of hues, but not devoid of spirit.
